Unit Evaluation

Unit Evaluation

This unit over all has been a whirlwind of emotions for me. As this is the part of the industry I would love to go into I knew this was my chance to throw myself really in to this unit. From the beginning of this unit I have thoroughly enjoyed the seminars with Kat and looking at how brands advertise their products, what their target audiences are, the difference between editorial and advertisement and getting to create looks as if they were fresh from the runway. When I began this unit I thought I wanted to work backstage mainly on fashion shows as a make-up artist but the more I have researched the more I have shifted towards advertisements and editorials.

Starting with research, this was interesting to see why brands do what they do, how they come up with their inspiration for their collections and truth be told it has made me a lot more aware of the fashion industry as a whole. The sourcing of clothes, ideas, make–up and hair designs has been some what of a learning curve. This is because of the fact that I have never really needed to do this for shoots before; this has made me feel like I have learnt so much since first year.

I am so happy with all my shoots, there are obviously some parts I would change but I know that as whole I am happy with the collection I have created. I really feel like I research and develop my ideas with Yves Saint Laurent itself. I know personally for myself that I am very good at changing my mind last minute and I feel as if this unit I have not changed my ideas, I believe this is me growing as a designer.

My main struggles in this unit have been in the studio because I feel like I don’t have the confidence I really want when taking pictures and setting up equipment but personally I don’t think my pictures show this. My other struggle is the blog; this is because I feel like I have repeated a lot of what I was trying to get across. Unfortunately I’m not as happy with my blog as last semester but for myself personally my images make up for that.

Over all this has been one of my favourite units because it truly interests me. I think it fits my personal style well and so does Yves Saint Laurent as a brand. I really think I will take this unit into consideration when creating my Final Major Project in third year.
