technical sessions: Photography with Gel Lighting

During this technical session with Simon we looked at creating photography with gel lighting. This was perhaps something we could use when it came to our editorial looks, or subtly for our advertisements.

The technical element to this technique within photography is to position the lights where you would like the coloured tint to hit the face. Using colours that will compliment the look the best.

The coloured gels themselves are pieces of thick coloured plastics that are attached within a metal casing and attached to the front of the lights used.

Here are some of our groups images that we created. We wanted to create something that was sexy and summery, something that mimicked a sunset.

As a group we really wanted to focus the light behind the hair as we thought this created such a beautiful look. We mainly used, blue and red gels and just turned the brightness up where needed. On the last image we were able to create a lens flare which is something that we think fit really well with our sunset theme we were trying to create.

I think I may try something like this when it comes to creating my editorial looks but I am unsure if it will fit with my chosen brands more edgy style. This is something I will have to research and test out when I create my main concept.
